Jericho on CBS

24 September, 2006 (21:44) | Reviews, Television

Well I just watched the premier of the new CBS show Jericho and while I like the concept of the show, what happens to a small town after a nuclear attack, the execution has a lot to be desired. The main charter is Jake Green, the 32 year old son come home for what he plan to be a brief visit only to become stranded when what appears to be nuclear attack on Denver, Colorado.

While the show has some good charters and there is great room for charter and plot development the pilot episode has technical plot holes you could drive a bus through. There are two vehicle crashed that are caused by the mushroom cloud that we see and both end with end with instant fatalities. The first is when Jake gets hit when an old man drifts in to the incoming lane while looking at the mushroom cloud. While Jake limps away with minor head and leg wounds the elderly couple are both instantly killed. Ok I could buy that, lack of seat belts and such, but the second crash is when a School bus hits a deer and it kills the driver it gets hard to buy. I mean come on a 5 maybe 6 ton bus hits a deer which weights at most 300 pounds and it not only kill the deer but brings the bus to a complete stop right on top of the animal and kills the driver sorry that went right off the believability meter.

Meanwhile back in town we have major panic both because of the mushroom cloud and because that the school bus is missing. So what does the mayor do sends all the cops out to find the school bus with instruction not to let civilians get involved in the search. WTF?? Sure that makes sense in the middle of a crisis whatever you do don’t ask for help. I mean come on even in the small towns that I have lived in there where Search and Rescue volunteers that are trained to help the police in case of emergencies like that.

The one part that I really take issue with is that after the police are unable to get a hold of anyone outside of town over their radio the Mayor comes up with the idea to use HAM Radio. A deputy says that there is only one HAM radio that she knows of in town. It turns out to be owned by the local nut job who thinks that it is aliens that are attacking. I am sorry but as a licensed amateur radio operator myself I extremely doubt that a town the size that Jericho appears to be would only have one HAM radio operator, and to make the one they do have the town nut case that was just uncalled for.

Those are just some of the problem I had with the pilot hopefully things will get better as the series progress. If not I don’t see much of a future for Jericho.
