Programing the Blog

5 August, 2007 (21:09) | Blogging, Sitenews

Well as you all can see I have changed the look of the site yet again. The change was brought about because resently I had seen the site on a couple other computers that weren’t mine and because of some weirdness cause by the fluid center column of the old theme made the site look like poo. So I have picked up a few book on web programing, O’reilly’s CSS: The Definitive Guide and Sams Teach Yourself:PHP, MySQL and Apache. At first I was going to use the CD from the Sams book to install a Apache web server with PHP and the MySQL database on my desktop, to make it easier to do development, but after encountering a more the a couple of problem I found something much better, XAMPP.

XAMPP is a single install preconfigured suite, it installs all of the above three plus Perl (the extra p in XAMPP). They have packages for Windows, Linux, Mac, and Solaris. It worked like a champ one quick download and install and everything was working without have to do any fiddling. So now I have a local copy of Wordpress installed and working which will make it much easier to work on the new site layout and with a little luck maybe a couple of simple plug-ins for Wordpress that will make it easier to maintain the site. Right now I am have to hand code too a lot to make the site work as I want. While this not to difficult if I have to make changes in the future it would be very time consuming.

Well thanks go out to the Urban Giraffe for a clean simple and customizable theme. I am debating wither to hack on this one or start from scratch on my own. My PHP & CSS skillz are kind of weak, and for me getting in the programing mood is kind of tough most of the time.
