For those Doctor Who fans out there the first season of the spin off series Torchwood is coming out on DVD this January in the US. I have only seen a couple of episodes of Torchwood but I have liked what I have seen so far. The Torchwood Institute investigates alien and other supernatural incidents, salvages what technology they can and try to see how it works. The Torchwood Institute ’separate from the government, outside the police, and beyond the UN’. Fun Fact: “Torchwood” is an anagram of “Doctor Who”, and was the codename for the new Doctor Who series during early production.

Torchwood is a late night program on BBC3 so it tend to be a bit more edgy and at times bloody, then Doctor Who but from what I have seen it also tend to be more grown-up then Docotor Who. Torchwood is still firmly planted in the Doctor Who universe however, with several charters from Doctor Who showing up from time to time.

The first episode that I saw was called The Glove, the Wales branch of Torchwood had a glove that would bring someone back from the dead for a short period of time and were trying to find the best method to use it. The team gets spied on by a cop who by the end of the episode ends up joining the team. It was very well written, I loved the line where Captain Jack, someone who is a bit more then human, taking about how he can taste the birth control hormones in the rain. The Glove was basically a into/plot episode so some things you can tell only took place in order to introduce the charters and the universe to the viewers. Overall from the few episodes I have seen and from what I have read Torchwood is a definite must see, so go check it out.
