Fansubs on the Mac
Well as a part time anime Geek one of the first things I downloaded and got working on the Mac was Bittorent client and got to downloading. I ran in to a bit of trouble when it came time to play the new episode of Bleach. It seems that the Quicktime Player don’t like the file much and even after downloading the codec that the player said I need I only got audio and no video. So like and good part time computer Geek I got to googleing to find a answer to my problem. At first I looked at the CCCP which is what I used on my old windoze box, but they don’t support the Mac so the search went on. Then I came cross MPlayer while everything on the surface looked liked it what I was after. As I started to dig a bit more into it the more complex it looked, all the walk thought for install and were for Tiger and my Mac is running Leopard and I would also have to install X11 to get it to work right. All that looked to be a bit too much work to simply get some anime to play.
Then I cam across the Perian Quicktime Component it adds .mkv and softsub support to the Quicktime Player and it was quick and easy to install. While it hasn’t been updated for Leopard everything seems to be working ok. If I come across a series that I can’t live without that won’t play then I will have to roll up my sleeves and figure out home to get Mplayer installed but for now I am all about being lazy and getting other things working and transferred over to the Mac.

@Ron~
Thanks Ron will look around. So far most of the groups that I get my subs from have been working fine with perian and maybe after I am more use to the Mac I will go back and try Mplayer. As a Mac newbie I was looking for a fast quick solution.

I uploaded the Mplayer OSX SAC (animesuki’s version which is really good) since the forums don’t seem to be playing nice with me today. All you have to do after you download this is make sure the settings are the same as this picture.

I’ve been using djoPlayer on my mac for a few years. It’s much better than QT for fansub avi’s. It uses mplayer.

Not usre about MKV’s though as even VLC is bad on my older system.

@Chichiwomoge
Will check it out this week end when I more time to fiddle.
@JB
Looks like djoPlayer hasn’t been updated in almost three year so don’t know how well it would get along with OS X 10.5
@danny
Thanks, everything so far looks like it is a toss up between Mplayer and VLC. Will try both this weekend and see how it goes.

perian is OK, but I find mplayer is alot better for softsubs (perian needs to load all the mkv data before it can display the subtitle).
There’s mac mplayer with ASS support built in, try to find it from animesuki forums.
