New Headphones Redux
Like I talked about in this post I ended up sending the AKG K171 headphones that I ordered back to Amazon and ordered the AKG K271 Studios. I am glad I did make the switch, even thou the 271s are a good bit bigger then the 171s they don’t weight that much more. The sound quality is just as good if not better and with the bigger ear cups they are a lot more comfortable on my big head.
The 271s do take a bit more power get good volume out of them then my Sennheiser HD215s. So when I first hooked them up to the computer to test I thought they were not working. Then I remembered that even with the 171s I had to increase the system volume about 10-15% to get normal sound levels out of them. But, it is not like you need a headphone amp for them the iPod drives them just fine. The only thing I don’t like about them that they come with a 3m straight cord. Now this would be fine if I was planing to hook them up to a home stereo system, but for portable use that much cord flapping is not a good thing. It’s ok thou the 271s cord is completely replaceable. The other feature of the 271’s is that they turn off when not in use. The 271s are marketed recording studios where you would not want unintended sound to leak back into the equipment but for what I intend to use them for it’s not really necessary.
