Mac Memory Upgrade
The RAM upgrade for the Mac came in today and once I recharged the batter for my camera I took some pics and installed it. The whole process including taking the pictures took less then ten minutes.
The first thing you’ll notice if your use to PC ram modules the massive heatsinks that the chips have. They are so big you most likely would not be able to install them in anything but a Mac. The install of RAM is unique to Mac as well. Instead of reaching into the machine to try and get the modules in, the system RAM in on removable riser cards.
Like most computers the RAM has to be installed in matched pairs. What’s a bit different is that if you only have one pair in the computer they are not on the same riser card.

Installed RAM moved to the A card

and the new RAM installed on the B card.
With the RAM upgrade the MAC now has a total of 6Gigs. The Mac Pro supports up to 32Gigs of RAM, I don’t think that I will ever install them much in the system unless I start doing some heavy video work. I might install another 4Gigs in a year or so.
While this hasn’t created a noticeable speed difference with normal tasks that I’ve noticed. It has helped out when I am running the Windows XP VM, I no longer get the spinning beach ball when switching for the VM back to a app on the Mac.
You may have notice that tonights post is up a bit earlier then normal, that’s cause I am off to the Airport soon to pick up my nephews who are coming in from South Carolina. So talk at you all later.
