One of the things I picked on my trip to SakuraCon was the third installment to Masamune Shirow’s Intron Depot Art books. Ballistics covers Shirow’s colored works from 1992-2002 that focus on sci-fi military themes. I’ve been a fan of Shirow’s sense the Appleseed days and now only need to get Intron Depot 4 Bullets to complete the collections. The downside is that as far as I can tell the Intron Depot series is out of print here in the States. Alot of people don’t seem to like Shirow’s current art style, you often here the complaints about shiny skin. While there is some of that in Ballistics most of the art show cases Shirow’s great use of color and the ability to create very detailed scenes. As of late Shirow has been using a computer to do a lot of his work which has enabled him to do several color and textural variations of a character and in Ballistics we get to see some of those and Shirow explains why the final one was chosen. My favorite quote from the book is where Shirow is describing the opening piece, “The heroine is a young Policewoman who wares a uniform so scanty one can only assume that the artist’s reasoning was impaired…”
