The ATLAS Detector

2 May, 2008 (20:02) | Stuff

The ATLAS Detector is part of the CERN Large Hadron Collider and to put it bluntly is REALLY F’ING HUGE. I saw parts of it being installed on NOVA a couple of months back and it wasn’t till I saw the video below over on the Bad Astronomy Blog that the scale of the thing really sinks in. The collider it’s self is 27Km (17miles) in circumference and crosses the boarder between France and Switzerland four times. ATLAS is one of several experment on the LHC the other being ALICE, CMS, LHCb, and TOTEM.

27 km now? They lengthened it since the past? CERN does have the largest particle accelerator after all. But I am still wondering if anything good is ever going to get published out of there.

Well as far as I’m aware it’s always been that big. They are working on getting the ring down to the operating temperature of ~2K right now. They expect to inject the first proton beams some time in June with the first collisions taking some time in August or September.

Interesting info to know, that. Hopefully some good comes out of it for research. Then again, they really could use the money for other stuff too, more important things right now.
