I went and saw the Indiana Jones movie today overall would have to say it’s a pretty good movie. Crystal Skull does not start out slow, the opening scene has Indy all ready captured by Russian agents who are after something hidden in a big warehouse, in what turns out to be Area 51. The Russians think that the item will lead them to a great physic weapon that they will use to control the world. Indy does manage to escape from the Russians and survives a Nuclear explosion. Now however he is under suspicion of the FBI of being a Russian sympathizer and ends up losing his job at the American university. As Indy is leaving town to go back to England he is tracked down by a young man, Mutt Williams, who is friends with one of Indy’s old college buddies, Harold Oxley. It seems that Oxley has gone missing after finding a Crystal Skull and the Mutt’s Mother, Mary, is also missing after going to South America to try and find Oxley. But, of course Mutt has a clue as to were they might be as Mary managed to escape and send Mutt a letter. After escaping from Russian agents who are after the letter Indy and Mutt are off to Peru.

Crystal Skull plays more like Holy Grail as Indy is out to find someone who has already discovered the treasure instead of trying to find the treasure himself like in Lost Ark. One nice thing is that they have aged Indy his hair is gray and he doesn’t bounce back up quite so fast after being knocked down. There is also a nice scene were Indy talks about the loss of Marcus and his father. There were also some nice callbacks to the early films. Durning the first sequence as the trucks are leaving Hanger 51 one breaks open a crate and you see the Ark inside. Crystal Skull also sees the return of Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood from Lost Ark, even after all these years her and Indy’s relationship hasn’t changed much, they are still yelling at each other almost nonstop.

There are however some plot holes you could drive a truck though. While they are in Hanger 51 they are looking for a create that contains something highly magnetic. So, Indy uses gunpowder thown into the air to track where the crate is. Later he uses the balls from shotgun shells to find where in a stack the crate is. Unfortunately for Indy neither is magnetic, gunpowder has no metals in it at all and shotgun shells in the ’50s used lead shot as nonmagnetic. Overall would have to say that Indy has crossed from the realm of action adventure with some fantasy elements to fantasy with some action adventure elements. It’s a good flick despite it’s short comings and if you are willing to completely suspend your disbelieve you’ll have a good time. So go check it out.
