As a part time SciFi geek one of my favorite Classic movie of all time has got to be The Andromeda Strain. Now more then thirty years after the original movie came out and almost 40 year after the book came out, A&E is doing a two night mini-series that airs next Monday the 26th.
While the original 1971 Robert Wise film has got to one of the all time great films, with it’s use of split screen and multiple images. Viewed today however it has started to show it’s age, with teletypes and ascii only computer displays. It will be interesting to see how the are going update the story. Unfortunately from what I have been reading on the ‘net the mini-series stray greatly from the Michael Crichton book. Hopefully they wont kill the story too much. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I refused to watch the movie, because I know it will stray from the original book, which was freaking awesome. I really loved the story.
Well the original movie didn’t stray too far with the story. A couple charters did change with the most notable being one of the scientist becoming female. With what I have been reading on the ‘net though the new one will stray pretty darn far.
Like the LoTR movies, it’s still excellent despite straying from the original (not that it’s anywhere near as good as the LoTR movies).
If it didn’t stray, how could it be suspenseful?

That’s true but with LoTR the plot pretty much stayed the same. The Andromeda Strain miniseries threw in all this extra wormhole/time travel stuff that totaly messed with the original plot/message.
