Saw this insane rig setup over on TUAW today. The pic is up on Flikr with all the rigs marked. They guy is using an application called Synergy to seamlessly move the mouse and keyboard from one computer to the next with out using a KVM. The set up uses Five Macs, Three Windows boxes, and a Linux box. All total he’s go 11,600 pixels in screen width.

Insane shit. WTF does he need so much working space for?

It is a bit crazy isn’t it. But, is not the biggest multi monitor/rig setup I’ve seen. Few years back I saw one that a guy was using for Microsoft Flight Simulator that gave him a 180 degree view, had four monitors for the front view and fifth one below for the instrument view. That rig was done back when it was all CRTs.

The laptops are just overkill. Not that 7 monitors isnt overkill already…

I used to dream of having a setup like this but in reality its more for show than anything. Productivity per screen is nowhere near enough to justify the ridiculous pricetag and electric bill.

Well a lot of a set up like this is about is single order retrieve ability. That is you don’t have to look for something among other things or move something out of the way to find something else.

If I remember right the guy was using the set up for web development and had development tools running on some screens and things like Photoshop and sever monitoring tools on others.

I’m running a dual screen set up myself now and it’s quite useful when you have multiple programs running or moving files around. It’s really helpful cause I run a lot of apps expanded to fill the screen because of my vision problems, so the more screen area I got the better.
