More Wildfires

Wildfire2.jpg

Well over the weekend most of California had a nice little thunder and lighting storm. Which being Summertime in California set off a whole bunch of wildfires. At one point there was something like 600 lighting started fires. Most of which were just small brush fires and were quickly contained. As of 0800 this morning however there are 34 major fire areas some of which are made up of as many as a 100 or more smaller fires. These are just the ones that CALFire is handling there are more that local fire control are taking care of. Add on top of that the possiblality that more fires are out there just smoldering in a lighting struck tree wait for the wind to pick up to burst into another wildfire.

So with 15 or so fire areas within 75 miles of where I live you get the picture above. Those are not clouds all that haze is smoke. For all of the day you couldn’t see the Sun it was only a brighter spot in the overall haze. The winds are pretty still right now so it looks like it is going to be more of the same for the next 4-5 days or so. Which isn’t too bad ’cause the last thing the firefighter want now is wind, which would just make the job of fighting the fires that much worse.

So much for ecological balance. It will be difficult fighting so many fires on such a large scale though. Interesting how lightning starts fires and the rain does not wash them away…if you do get any rain anyway.

Well with this storm system it was thunder and lighting only very little rain if any. We’ve also had a very dry spring this year with only about 20% of average rainfall. So the brush is pretty darn dry at this point. Was just watching the news and they said that there were over 5000 lighting strikes over the weekend.

Right I just read up on climate and environmental science, and realized that the storms’ lightning are the starting points…and with the damn dry weather, not good combination. :\

5000 is a damn lot too. Hope they all get them under control.

Well we are into day three of living under a smoke dome. It’s weird going outside at 1800 and the sky is orange.

This link is a resent satellite view of California as you can see there is a hell of a whole lot of smoke.
