I kind of got on a Neil Gaiman kick yesterday after reading about Coraline being made into a movie. I had picked up Stardust on DVD a couple of weeks back and sat down last night and watched it.

Now as a movie Stardust is pretty good. It is kind of your standard Boy goes on quest to win the heart of his lady fair. Finds new girl along the way and finds out that Love isn’t something that you have to prove. Bad guys lose and everyone lives happily ever after.

As an adaption of Neil Gaiman’s book thou it falls greatly short. Most of the sense of wonder from the book is gone. The other side of the Wall is no longer Faerie but just the magical Kingdom of Stronghold. Gone is the every nine years on May Day Faerie Market where the Human World and Faerie mix. In the movie no one is allowed to cross the Wall, Ever.

I understand that Movies usually portray everything that was in a book, and they often have to simplify the narrative. But for Stardust they snuck a guppy in to the trout pond and are still calling it a trout. Now that is not to say that Stardust is a bad movie. It’s very good, De Niro as Capt. Shakespeare was one of the highlight of the film. And the fight between Tristan and Septimus at the end was great. But, I felt a little disappointed as I went into expecting to see The Book.

If you want a more in depth comparison between the book and movie head over to And We Shall March.
