The WordPress is all a buzz with the release of version 2.7 ‘Coltrane’. Coltrane marks the second major UI redesign of WordPress in less then a year. But this redesign has a lot more testing and user input behind it then the 2.5 UI change, there was even a open contest for the Icon design. The new interface is a lot more intuitive and customizable then the last and with the behind the scene changes ensure that this should be the last major for quite some time.
But, 2.7 is not just about UI changes. There are some major changes to the system as well. The most exciting and helpful to me is the built in updating. Before when you wanted to upgrade you self hosted blog you and to download the new version up zip it, delete the old version from your website, then upload the new version. Now if you had shell access to you hosting site this isn’t too hard but if you only have FTP access or like me you connection is a bit wonky this could take a while. But now with 2.7 you just push a couple of buttons and WordPress will upgrade its self, making it a lot less nerve wracking it stay up to date with security fixes.
Plus this one click upgrade has also made it to plug-in install. Plug-in install use to be the same as WordPress, download, unzip, upload, activate. But, from the WordPress UI you can browse the plug-in archive and once you find the one you want click and it’s installed. If the plug-in you want isn’t part of the WordPress archive it is still easy just tell WP where the zip file is on your system and it will upload unzip and install it for you.
All in all the new 2.7 is a great change to the WP platform and we should see more great things from them in the future.
Still waiting to be sure it does not bork up my plugins lol. By the way I sent you an email did you receive it?
Hopefully 2.7 wont bork anything here either. There is a list of plugins that are compatible here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Plugins/Plugin_Compatibility/2.7
