As a kid I built and launched a few model rockets, nothing bigger then a two stage ‘D’ motor rocket. But, Steve Eves went all out of the Fortieth anniversary year of man’s landing on the moon. Steven built a 1:10 scale version of the Saturn V rocket. The scale rocket stands 36 feet tall and weights in at 1600 pounds. The lift was provided by 8 ‘N’ motors and central ‘P’ motor. Now the way rocket motors letters work is that a ‘B’ motor has approximately twice the thrust as an ‘A’ motor. So one ‘N’ motor has 1024 times the thrust as those little ‘D’ motors that I used, and the ‘P’ four times the thrust as the ‘N’ motors. All told the rocket had around 8000lbs of thrust. Near the end of this video you can hear them talking about how much thermite are in the motors. On April 25, 2009, at about 1 p.m. Steve got into the record books with the successful launch of the rocket hitting an altitude of over 3000ft. His parachutes worked so well that the lower section landed on it’s tail.
