Desk Redux

Well the pic above is how my desk looks up until today, when I got motivated and changed things up.

The cause of the motivation was that a few weeks back my mom’s computer died and when she bought her new one it came with a new 23″ in monitor. So what does that have with changing up my desk? Well me and Mom both had the same 20″ Samsung LCD monitor that we picked up at a Black Friday sale a couple of years back. So with Mom having a nice new 23″ LCD I took the 20″ in trade for services rendered.

Now while the Mac will support two monitors they both wouldn’t fit on the desk in it current configuration. So a rearranging was in order. After enough room was created it was time to hook the second monitor up to the Mac. Mom’s monitor had a VGA cable and while I did have a VGA to DVI converter it’s always better to go straight DVI if you can. So it was into my box of cable I had to dive in search of a cable I was pretty sure I had.

Box o’ Cables

Now the Box o’ Cables has pretty much ever kind of home use cable you can think of in there. There’s some video, coax, USB, Firewire, phone, heck you name it and I most likely have it, there’s even some old parallel port data transfer cables in there. So after a bit of digging I did find the DVI cable I needed.

Dual monitors are oh so nice.

So after a little work there it is the new desk set up. Now having the Mac sitting like that, not on it’s feet. May not be the best thing for keeping it cool but now that fall is here the room stays a lot cooler. I work on some thing and have it back on it’s feet by next summer. I might get real motivated and build a new desk, I need a bigger one anyway because with the current set up I had to deconnect the scanner.

One weird things that I ran in to was getting the spanning wallpaper set up. Now with a PC the whole desktop is made up of all monitors so you find a wide background you like and bam your done. On a Mac each monitor is its own desktop so if you set a wallpaper on one it doesn’t effect the other. So what I had to do was split the image I found in to two halves and set each half as the background on each monitor. The downside to this is I can’t use the auto wallpaper changer like I use to, but I have some ideas on how to fix that.

Yes two screens are much better.

I have found a work a round for the changing background. The left screen is set to one directory that only has the left side of the back ground and the same with the right side. Then with both directories set I quickly hit the change background every X minutes box on both screens. There are a few seconds where the screens do not match but it works ok.

Actually, I was talking less about the screens and more about the organization ;)
