Review: Kindle Lighted Cover

I’ve had my Kindle for a few months now and have been using it a lot more in the last month or so. But the one thing I have had for it was a cover.

Kindle Lighted Cover for the what they are now calling the Kindle Keyboard cost $50 and it was kind of me to justify spending almost half of what the device cost for a cover. I have the ad supported Kindle and the other day one of the ads was an offer to ge the lighted cover for 50% off so I jumped and bought one.

One thing I like about Amazon is how they are rethinking packaging with there “Frustration free packaging.” Because Amazon’s products will never see a retail shelve they don’t need anything flashy to attract customers so the packaging also double as the shipping box.

One of the nicest thing about the Amazon case is the fact that fact that there is now straps or pockets to hold it in the case. Instead two metal prongs lock into the side of the Kindle. The lower prong gets inserted at an angle then the upper one is spring loaded and locks the Kindle in. The metal prongs also have another function, they are the taps that hook into the Kindles battery to run the light. When the Kindle is in ‘sleep’ mode the light is off but wake the Kindle up and have the light in the out position and you are good to go.

The light itself is three very bright white LEDs that give a good, thou not perfect, coverage over the reading surface. Even thou I have a light that I use when I read in bed I find that the LED light gives good supplemental lighting and because of it’s ‘white’ light makes the Kindle easier to read then with just the yellowish light I get from my lamp.

The case about doubles the weight that you end up holding while reading. I find that it makes the Kindle a bit harder to read one handed as the cover doesn’t fold back on itself very well.

Overall I’m satisfied with my purchase, it’s a good deal at the $25 that I paid and a bit pricy at the $50 that it normally goes for. I think Amazon is going to have to lower their price now that the ad supported Kindle Keyboard goes for $99 and a lot more people like me are going to find it a bit hard to justify spend half of the cost of the device for a cover for it.
