Well to continue the trend from Day 3 today’s pick is a group for the late 80′s that has a lot of aliases. The KLF, is also know as The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu aka The JAMs and on one occasion as The Timelords. The Timelords only really had one song that was a mash up of the Doctor Who mash-up of the Doctor Who theme music, Gary Glitter’s “Rock and Roll (Part Two)” with sections from “Blockbuster!” by Sweet and “Let’s Get Together Tonite” by Steve Walsh, which while panned by critics his number one on the UK charts.
The two founder of The KLF, Bill Drummond aka King Boy D and Jimmy Cauty aka Rockman Rock, I think took the whole acid house thing a bit to literally and just might have taking a bit too much acid. Because while the their music was catchy and commercial successful, their off stage action were often very bazaar. Their last live performance was at the 1992 British Phonographic Industry’s annual award show where Drummond and Cauty had planned to throw buckets of sheep’s blood on the audience but where prevented from doing so by BBC lawyers. But later in the evening the pair dumped a dead sheep with the message “I died for you—bon appetit” tied around its waist at the entrance to one of the post-ceremony parties. A couple of years later they started the K Foundation, which engaged in numerous art project, the most notorious of which was the burning of a million pounds sterling, in cash.
All that aside I’m here to talk about 3 A.M. the #1 single off the album The White Room. But here’s the rub there are all most as many version of 3 A.M as Bill and Jimmy have band aliases. The While Room album came out in 1991 but there have been single of 3 A.M. out there since 1989. The version that appears on The White Room is “3 a.m. Eternal (Live at the S.S.L.)” The “S.S.L.” in the subtitle refers to a Solid State Logic mixing desk. Although a lot of crowd noise is featured on the mix, and sound like it was recored at a large stadium performance it is in fact a purely studio-based creation.
Here’s the link to “3 A.M.” from Amazon. Anything you buy after clicking this link results in a small kickback to me from Amazon. All proceeds will be used to buy Christmas presents for my family. Ahh who am I kidding I’ll most likely use it to buy books for myself. But don’t worry I’ll still buy Christmas presents for my family.
